Coming up – August 2017

Two community events are focusing on poetry in Ngaio and Crofton Downs this August, and if you live, work or play here – or would like to visit! – you’re invited to take part.

The first event is an opportunity for people to have a go at writing and sharing poems via a display at Cummings Park Library.

Everyone is welcome to participate – and to help get your writing started, the library will show a small selection of photographs taken in our area. You’ll be able to look at the photos, respond, and display your resulting poems alongside the photos of your choice. (You can include your name too, or keep your poems anonymous if you wish.)

You can take whatever approach you want – funny, heartfelt, meditative, rhyming or not! You might write about the here and now, issues facing our community, or how you feel about things here. Or your response might lead you into other kinds of writing – love poems, speculative fiction, remembering…

The second event is a poetry reading, also at the library, in association with Phantom Billstickers National Poetry Day.

A number of terrific poets have associations with Ngaio and Crofton Downs – living or working here, going to school or studying in our community. The evening will include some of these poets reading their work, as well as a sampling of other writers with connections to our area who have written and worked with poems. There will also be an open mic (so you’re welcome to come along and share poems on the night).

See the bottom of this page for more details – and for more information nearer the events, including our lineup of reading poets, please check in again here over the coming weeks.
